With warmer weather right around the corner (or here already as it has been most of this winter), it is time to start focusing on playing golf again - not just beating balls when it's nice out. There are 3 types of practice that should take place on the driving range: the warm up, skill improvement, and play simulation. This vlog is all about the last version - play simulation or 'practicing to play.'
When practicing to play, we are no longer focused on making the right swing or right move. We are now trying to see how well prepared we are to take our game to the course. Which of the new skills we have been working on have become ingrained and which ones still need more time and work? In order to do so, we are going to change the target and our club with each swing. We also will have a predetermined number of shots to hit - no raking another ball over if we hit the last one poorly. We are also looking for any patterns or tendencies.
In this video, I am hitting 9 golf balls with 5 different clubs because our range has 5 different flags. Take your time with each ball and go through your routine. Focus just as if you were hitting this shot on the course. Often times, amateur golfers measure how hard they are working in the number of balls they hit and the amount of time they spend. The best players in the world strike a healthy balance between the two. They may hit half of the balls that you do in an hour, but each and everyone has a target, a specific ball flight, and a purpose.
It is often said that 'practice makes perfect' or 'perfect practice makes perfect.' My mantra is simple: 'PRACTICE WITH A PURPOSE.'
